School of Life Science
School of Life Science in Liaoning Normal University is the former Biology Branch of Dalian Normal Specialized Postsecondary School established in 1952. In 1983, Liaoning Normal School was renamed as Liaoning Normal University and Biology Department started enrolling Postgraduates at the same year. In 1995, Biology Department began to train doctoral students in collaboration with Shenyang Agricultural University and Dalian University of Technology. In 1997, it was renamed as School of Life Science. In nearly 60 years of history, School of Life Science got the substantial development in majors, education scale, education level, education circumstance and faculty. Our school has already become the fostering base of biology teachers of secondary education and professional personnel of biotechnology and environmental science. At present, in our school there are 58 teachers, including 18 professors, 16 associate professors, 7 lecturers. At the same time, there are 1 teacher honored New Century Personnel by the Ministry of Education, 1 provincial famous teacher, 2 provincial outstanding experts and 6 municipal outstanding experts. There are also 2 experts who have been receiving special government allowance from the State Council. 83% of our teachers have Ph.D and 50% of the teachers with high academic title have overseas education and research backgrounds.
There are 3 undergraduate majors in our school, including Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, and Environmental Sciences. There are Cell Biology Doctorate Station, master stations of the first-level discipline of Biology, Marine Biology, Environmental Biology and Curriculum and Teaching Methodology. We have 2 provincial-level key disciplines: Cell Biology and Marine Biology, and 2 provincial-level key laboratories: Plant Biotechnology and Biotechnology and Molecular Drug Research and Development. There is also a provincial-level engineering center.
Marine Biotechnology Center. Biological Science is the Ministry of Education featured program construction, and biotechnology major is provincial model program. In addition, the school has the Provincial Biology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, including 17 teaching laboratories of basic courses and specialized courses: Botany, Plant Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Genetic Engineering, Study of Microorganism, Zoology, Teaching Methodology, Environmental Science, Environment Monitoring, Molecular Biology and Cell Cultivation. Our school has 1702 scientific research instruments and the total value of them is some 14950000 Yuan. Among these instruments, one Liquid Chromatolysis-Mass Spectrum Inducing Purifying System costs 2906331.06 Yuan. In 2009, a digital interactive microscope room was built. There are many teaching auxiliary facilities, including computer room, reference room and the biological herbarium, which was selected as Dalian Science base and became Liaoning Science Base in 2011. Our school has already trained 695 specialist school graduates, 3850 undergraduates, 493 postgraduates and 17 doctoral students. Now there are 547 full-time undergraduates, 237 graduates working on master’s program, 10 graduates working on Ph.D programs, 16 part-time graduates working on master’s program.
In almost 10 years, our teachers have published 527 academic papers. Among these papers 181 were published in national journals, 111 in foreign journals, and 96 papers were collected by SCI Index. There are 12 books published. There are 4 books that were issued under our teachers’ general editorship. 24 patents were applied. We assumed 30 national research projects. Among these five are No.863 and No. 973 Branch Project. There are 20 National Natural Science Funds. We have 110 provincial and municipal scientific research programs, among which two are from Ministry of Education Support Plan for New Century Excellent Talents, 6 research funds for personnel back from foreign countries, 3 Excellent Talents Support Programs from schools and universities in Liaoning Province. Two Research results won the Second Prize for Liaoning Government Technology Prize; one won the Second Prize r for Technology Invention; 20 programs won Liaoning Natural Science Excellent Achievements.
Our school actively reforms practical teaching system, enlarges the proportion of comprehensive and designing experiment classes by the program of open laboratory and training the undergraduates to do research programs so as to improve the undergraduates’ innovation ability. In five years the undergraduates have published 90 academic papers. Some students won Prizes in “Challenger Cup” Competition for Extracurricular Scientific works and innovation: 2 Third Prizes and 6 for Excellent Performance. Two inventions patent in the name of our undergraduates. In the Herbarium Making Contest 2009, three students won the first prize; three won the second prize and nine won the third prize.In addition, our school insists on multi-level school pattern. In order to cater to people in the society of different education levels, different ages who want to continue to pursue their education, the school has some other school forms besides full-time undergraduates and postgraduates, including students taught by correspondence, education master's program, and so on. At the same time, our school help institutions of higher learning of our country to train their teaching assistants and key teachers. Our school also attaches great importance to foreign communication and cooperation, and has sent more than a dozen teachers to the United States, Germany, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Australia, Hong Kong and other countries or regions to study, research cooperatively and investigate, which has established good relations of cooperation and communication with some foreign Institutions of higher learning, some department of Research Units and institutions. At the same time, the school has established good cooperation relations with many research institutes and universities, greatly enhanced the level of the school teachers' teaching and scientific research.
